(Sold #6-1128) This is a Farmer's Wife quilt, made in 2010's Block Of The Month Club. In the 1920's, the "Farmer's Wife" newspaper sponsored a contest with money prizes for the best letters about whether a mother would want her daughter to marry a farmer. The letters inspired a pattern book, "The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt" (I carry it), and excerpts from the letters are included. The first letter in the book is from Valley County, Montana. The 76 x 94 inch quilt contains 111 varied 6 inch blocks. Click to see it full-sized in a window.

I donated this Hobo quilt to the Railroad Museum. The Hobo quilt is based on symbols used by American hobos from the late 1800s to about 1940. The patterns came from a book called "Hobo Quilts" that we have for sale. The book not only contains the patterns, but also brief stories written by individuals riding the rails, and members of the families that the hobos would visit. A lot of these men were riding the rails during the depression years looking for work. Here's the link to my Hobo quilt's big photo.
